LEOTC (Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom) Through DANZ IN SCHOOLS

DANZ Education Officer: Annabel Reader

The DANZ Education Officer provides hands-on interactive learning experiences that enhance and enrich the curriculum. This is funded by the Ministry of Education through their Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom initiative.

Programmes Available:

Integrated Arts Workshop

Students exploring dance in relation to visual arts, music and drama

Aim to develop students' choreography and performance skills in an integrated arts environment Workshops are based on-site in museums, art galleries, libraries etc.

 

Kaitoke School
Kaitoke School at Wanganui Library

Curriculum strands: Communicating and interpreting in dance; developing practical knowledge in dance; understanding dance in context.

Dance Workshops or forums relating to dance performances

Aim to give students and teachers the opportunity to understand aspects of artistic and cultural diversity in live performance.

The sessions will involve creative dance sessions or forums in which the students are guided to explore an element or idea from a live performance which they will attend or have attended.

Flaxmere school
Flaxmere Primary School with EIT Dance students

These sessions will vary depending on the age and ability of the students.

Curriculum strands: Developing practical knowledge in dance; developing ideas in dance; communicating and interpreting in dance.

Students Exploring Dance-Making

Aim to explore ways of creating dance and vocabularies of movement. Students will learn how to use various sources of motivation and inspiration in creating their own dance. The sessions will work through ideas and choreographic development and aspects of preparing for a performance.

Curriculum strands: Developing practical knowledge in dance; developing ideas in dance; communicating and interpreting in dance.

Behind the Scenes

Students will investigate and gain an understanding of the working context for dance professionals and tertiary dance students in a variety of genres of dance. The venues and their production function as the resource.

Curriculum strands: Communicating and interpreting in dance; understanding dance in context.

Who: years 5-13
When: Available March and June
What: Students Exploring Dance-Making workshop
Cost: $4 per student for up to 1½ hour, $5 up to 3 hours 30 students per class max
Behind the scenes at Toi Poneke Wellington Arts Centre
Where: Toi Poneke Wellington Arts Centre 69 Abel Smith Street, Wellington
What: Visit a dance studio and take a Workshop based around your class topic, projects you are teaching, help, inspiration and support in any school performances.
Dance around a Myth and legend, create a dice chance dance, a contemporary technique class, learn about trust /support work,…
When: Flexible timetable.
Cost: $4 1½  hr, $5 ½ day, $6 full day per student

Behind the Scenes at the Ballet
Where: Royal New Zealand Ballet studios
Who:  year 7-13
What: go behind the scenes at the Ballet, find out what makes the company tick, see the dancers in class, look at the costumes up close
When: 13-16 February 10-11 am
Cost: free 30 students per group max

Balclutha
Where: Balclutha at your school
What: Workshops based around your class topic, projects you are teaching, help, inspiration and support in any school performances.

Cost: $4 1½  hr, $5 ½ day, $6 full day per student
