DANCE PARTNERS PROJECT17th December 2007
The DANZ Dance Partners project - linking dance with schools and communities began in October. Funded by the Lion Foundation, it enables DANZ to develop and strengthen the interface between dance in communities, schools and performance groups. This may take the form of performances or workshops in schools or dance work in the community health area. Linking dance with health is a new area of development for DANZ.
The project recognises:
• diversity of dance in NZ - cultural, social, recreational and performance,
• the power of dance to motivate and inspire young people of all backgrounds and abilities
• health, exercise and expressive qualities of dance
• The need for support through training and opportunities
At the core of the project is the development of new networks beyond the dance industry including links with health and recreation providers. Information is a key aspect, informing about opportunities and providing resources on new approaches to dance. The project will link with schools through DANZ LEOTC (dance experiences outside the classroom) and the Arts Online and CAFE (Community Artists for Education) websites.
In 2008, workshops and resources will be made available in areas such as dance health, safety and wellbeing, best practice in teaching, dance entrepreneurship and understanding the school and community environment for dance.
The project, which is a pilot, will target support work in 5 regions:
Wellington, Auckland, Canterbury, Bay of Plenty and Nelson/Marlborough.
