WORKS BY LEMI PONIFASIO AT THE EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL.16th August 2010
This August, Samoan choreographer Lemi Ponifasio presents his work for the first time at the Edinburgh International Festival. Tempest: Without a Body. and Birds with Skymirrors are two works performed by Ponifasio's New Zealand-based company MAU.
A choreographer who has been discussed in the some breath as Pina Bausch and Merce Cunningham, Lemi Ponifasio was born in Samoa, where he retains the title of Sala, a High Chief. In 1995, Ponifasio formed MAU in Auckland, a community of artists, scholars and intellectuals which exists as a driving force for local-oriented arts, thought and stories that have been silenced or excluded over the years.
Tempest: Without a Body
Part dance, part theatre, part ceremony, Tempest: Without a Body is an awe-inspiring reflection on our modern world from Samoan choreographer Lemi Ponifasio and his company MAU. Maori activist Tame Iti is the focal point on stage for this Shakespeare inspired work which delves deep into the iconic world of Polynesian ritual.
Birds with Skymirrors
The environmental tragedy created by discarded plastic - the 'Pacific Garbage Patch' - inspired Ponifasio's second work at the 2010 Edinburgh International Festival. The resulting piece, Birds with Skymirrors, is a haunting and timely reflection on our relationship with the earth, which comes at a time of urgent and anxious debates on global warming.
