A NEW TOURING INITIATIVE19th October 2009
In 2009 DANZ led the development of CART (Carting the Arts 'Round Town), an initiative to develop a regional touring circuit in the Auckland area. The primary aims were to grow audiences in regional centres and offer performers the opportunity for an extended season.
With grant funding from Rodney and North Shore councils, CART worked with Atamira Dance Collective to take Memoirs of Active Service to three venues in Belmont, Orewa and Browns Bay. This story of love, separation and loss experienced by New Zealanders in World War II was accessible to an audience who may not previously have been to a contemporary dance production, it had strong appeal to a 50+ audience but also attracted trans-generational interest.
Audience response was such that the team that nurtured the development of CART has established a charitable trust with the specific purpose of producing and promoting regional tours and building audiences, not only for dance but also theatre and music, in venues outside the central business district. The Touring Arts Charitable Trust is planning a schedule of tours of the Auckland region (initially up to five venues as part of a single tour) that will grow as audience demand and interest develops.
While the Trust is still in the early stages of its development, trustees (Graeme Bennett, Susan Jordan, Margaret-Mary Hollins, Lauren Hughes and Andrew Malmo) have a vision of a nation that values and enjoys live performing arts in their local venues. They believe the Trust has a powerful role in invigorating regional audiences through the presentation of quality New Zealand arts.
The next steps are to develop a name and to contract the first production for a tour in the middle of 2010. The name and logo will be formally unveiled at the PANNZ conference in Wellington in March 2010, when Trust representatives will also be seeking well-developed dance and theatre works suitable for touring to regional theatres.
