NZ DANCE RESOURCES15th April 2010
This is a list of films, music and books on dance in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
These resources are of interest for dance fans and for teachers in New Zealand primary and secondary schools. Teachers use resources to support curriculum work and dvds are used for NCEA study.
DANZ Resources
Original New Zealand dvds, cds and books to assist dance teaching. Includes the work of Douglas Wright, Shona McCullagh, Footnote Dance, Anita Hutchins and the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
In Full Flight
Four NZ dance documentaries from television series Mercury Lane - MAU Pacific Dance, Raewyn Hill, Limbs and the Royal New Zealand Ballet. Four different reasons for dancing as a career, and different approaches to choreography from diverse dance styles; contemporary from Pacific and Pakeha perspectives, historical (Limbs 1980s) and ballet. Appropriate for years 9-13 but could be used to illustrate dance styles for a younger age too. 46 min. Ihi Frenzy
Making of a Dance video resource of the 2001 production of Ihi FrENZy by the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Te Matarae I Orehu. Dance Education in New Zealand Schools 1900-2008
An illustrated monograph, by Jan Bolwell, that documents the development of dance in New Zealand schools. The author discusses physical training based upon English physical education philosophies and the gradual evolution of dance education practices which reflected the cultures of this land. Dance of the Instant
Documentary of The New Dance Group who played a key role in pioneering modern dance in New Zealand in the 1940s. Inspired by Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey, pioneers of modern dance, with whom one of the members (Rona Bailey) had studied in New York. The film, directed by Shirley Horrocks, features striking archival footage of the group, lively and engaging interviews with surviving members, re-enactments, and many rare photographs.
Dancing Fulbrighters
Written by Fulbright alumna Jennifer Shennan to mark Fulbright New Zealand's 60th anniversary, this 24 page booklet documents the exchange experiences of 15 New Zealand and American Fulbright grantees in the field of dance, including dancers, choreographers, educators, researchers and critics. "In this delightful booklet, with photographs to bring the text to life, Jennifer has produced a little jewel that tells some of the dance history of our country...
