Kaupapa - Philosophy
"One of the principal
elements that influences my dance theatre is tikanga Maori. Of Ngai Tahu, Waikato
and Rangitane descent, I am inspired by the dance potential of kapa haka (traditional
Maori performing arts). From my early work as a choreographer, such as Ko Au-The
Self (1992), to my latest dance theatre work, Te Mana (2003), I have
regularly incorporated Maori influences in my choreography and explored themes
relevant to my bi-cultural heritage. In this regard, my aim has been to develop
dance theatre that is informed by kapa haka, contemporary dance and classical
ballet. " "I believe Maori culture has the potential to play a profound
role in dance theatre because of its spiritual energy. Dance is a form of performance
art that goes beyond words and pictures to communicate with its audience via the
poetry of movement. Dance reaches people through its ability to speak to the human
condition by evoking an emotional and spiritual response. The Maori essence
of wairua shares these characteristics and so lends itself well to being
an integral element of dance performance."
