FUNDING

Creative New Zealand is a key funder of contemporary dance. Their funding page offers advice to applicants, including budget templates (also useful for applications to other funding bodies).

Local councils provide funding through the Creative Communities Scheme.

The Department of Internal Affairs web site has a 'services' section with information on funding from Community Grants Schemes, Gaming Societies (pub charities) and Lottery grants.

The Cultural Funding Guide is targeted specifically to the arts with useful filters e.g. community, groups, individuals.

The Funding Information Service provides the information for the Cultural Funding Guide and is usually accessible only on subscription (this website has a good resources section).

RESIDENCIES & SCHOLARSHIPS

Residencies

  • The Caroline Plummer Fellowship in Community Dance - New Zealand or International community dance pracitioners, teachers and researchers can apply for a six month fellowship at The University of Otago, Dunedin.
  • Arts Centre of Christchurch Artist-in-Residence - Proposals are invited for projects that happen at the Arts Centre, or reference the history of the site, and involve the wider community in some way. The artist resides at the Arts Centre for 1-2 months.
  • Australian Choreographic Centre Australia - New Zealand Dance Collaboration Residency - A professional development opportunity for a New Zealand choreographer to work with Australian and New Zealand dancers and choreographers at the Australian Choreographic Centre in Canberra, Australia.
  • Culture programme Asia:NZ - grants for an Asian dimension in New Zealand festivals, Asian exhibitions and performers, building professional skills and networks for staging Asian exhibitions and performance, and supporting residencies for arts professionals which enhance inter-cultural awareness and culture exchange.

New Zealand Scholarships

  • Creative New Zealand - Tup Lang Scholarship for choreography in contemporary dance ($10,000 Annually). Priority is given to young or emerging choreographers. Choreographers or contemporary dance groups who apply to Creative New Zealand's July funding round under the New Work or Creative and Professional Development funding programmes are automatically considered.
  • Creative New Zealand - Choreographic Fellowship for senior choreographers ($65,000). Supports choreographers to develop new practices, undertake specific research or deepen their skill or knowledge base.
  • Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship - Full fee scholarship to attend the University of Waikato, Hamilton and personal development programme. Awarded to students who excel academically and in sport or creative and performing arts, who have the capability to lead, and who are either current tertiary students or school leavers.
  • The Warren Douglas Scholarship Fund. For those who want to make the transition from performer to arts administrator. Email warrendouglastrust@yahoo.com
  • Dorothy Daniels Dance Foundation. Awards to dance students, professional dancers, dance teachers and choreographers to progress their professional development. For further information contact Dawn Sanders Action-Sanders@xtra.co.nz, phone (04) 476 8369.
  • The Alana Haines Australasian Awards. An international jury awards cash and scholarships to young dancers, 11 - 21yrs. For further information email ahaawards@yahoo.co.nz or phone (04) 976 0581.
  • Te Waka Toi Scholarships - A number of scholarships for post-secondary school Maori students in the fields of Maori arts, or arts-related
    areas such as curating, art history, or performing arts production.
  • Artists in Antarctica - Logistical and financial support each year to two prominent New Zealand artists at the forefront of their career. Antarctic Arts Fellows spend around two weeks in Antarctica exploring the Ross Sea region through self designed projects.
  • AMP Scholarship Programme - Each year the company awards 12 AMP Scholarships valued up to $10,000 plus a further fund of $80,000 to be shared amongst those winners selected. Previous recipients range from glass artists and scientists to ballet dancers and actors.
  • Certificate in Maori Performing Arts - Te Wananga o Aotearoa. No tuition fees, this 36 week course is open entry and fully subsidised.
  • Christchurch Dance Education Bursary Trust - Annual bursaries to Canterbury dance students enrolled in National or International accredited professional dance training programmes. Also provides masterclasses for advanced students with International tutors.

  • Tertiary Education Commission - The TEC is responsible for the allocation of all post compulsory education funding.

International Scholarships

  • Smash Palace Fund - To encourage and support the convergence between the arts and science as a building block for innovation and creativity. The result of a partnership between Creative New Zealand and the Ministry of Science Research and Technology (MoRST). 
  • UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists - 62 arts fellowships with 50 partner institutions in 30 countries. The programme aims to open up new career prospects for artists and provide them with the opportunity for further training in specialised institutions.
  • Fulbright New Zealand A range of awards for New Zealand graduate students to undertake study, research or travel at institutions in the United States.
  • Winston Churchill Memorial Trust - Assists New Zealanders to travel overseas to learn more about other people and cultures and to investigate topics that will help them to increase their contribution to the community and their trade, industry, profession, business or calling.
  • New Zealand Japan Exchange Programme - The New Zealand Japan Exchange Programme aims is to promote a deeper understanding between New Zealand and Japan through a programme of educational and cultural exchanges. contact programmes@ilanz.ac.nz or (04) 913 6490
  • Commonwealth Arts & Crafts Awards - To help winning artists explore their art in another Commonwealth country by working alongside other artists or within an arts institution.
