DANZ - Dance Aotearoa New Zealand

DANZ IS THE NATIONAL ORGANISATION FOR NEW ZEALAND DANCE

We work for the success and health of New Zealand dance through

  • education
  • development and support of the industry
  • promotion and visibility of dance
  • and all New Zealanders having a chance to dance

We support people involved in dance; students, teachers, choreographers, performers, presenters, researchers and writers. We make connections, plant seeds, offer options, identify possibilities, advocate, broker and suggest directions. Our role is in stimulating and empowering people for the creation and presentation of dance.

DANZ has been a registered charitable organisation since 1997. DANZ is a membership organisation for those involved in the professional, education and recreation sectors of New Zealand dance. We work with the industry towards the success and health of New Zealand dance.

DANZ is recognised as the peak organisation to represent the New Zealand dance industry by major organisations such as Creative New Zealand, Ministry of Culture and Heritage, Ministry of Education, Skills Active Industry Training Organisation, New Zealand Recreation Association, SPARC and Local Authorities.

Performance

DANZ has received funding from Creative New Zealand since its inception to provide support for the dance industry. We provide information, services and resources. In 2008 DANZ facilitated consultation for, and published, the New Zealand Dance Industry Strategy.

Training

DANZ provides and supports a variety of training such as DANZ workshops, forums and mentoring. DANZ has a contract with the Ministry of Education to provide Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom (LEOTC) for New Zealand schools and is the hub for the Dance Subject Association.

and Participation

We wish to see dance in all its diversity, actively promoted across New Zealand as a healthy option for physical activity and fun, for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. With support from SPARC through a No Exceptions contract, in 2008-2010 DANZ conducted research into dance for people with disabilities and produced the New Zealand Disability and Dance Strategy - "Would You Like This Dance?"
