Course Description

The Dance Studies programme at the University of Otago provides a unique opportunity to study dance as a major focus within the Arts and Sciences.

Dance Studies involve the theoretical and practical exploration of dance as well as exploring its diversity within social, educational, artistic and cultural contexts.

Research focus areas are: Dance Education, Somatics, Choreography as Research, Dance Ethnography, Dance and Gender, Dance and Ecology.

Title of Qualifications

Students may make dance a focus of their study in:

  • Bachelor of Arts: Performing Arts Major, or
  • Bachelor of Physical Education, or
  • Masters in Dance Studies

Duration of Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts, Performing Arts Major - 3 years
  • Bachelor of Physical Education - 4 years
  • Masters in Dance Studies - 1 Calendar year

Dance Pre-requisites

  • Bachelor of Arts: Performing Arts Major: nil
  • Bachelor of Physical Education: nil
  • Masters in Dance Studies: 4 year undergraduate qualification or 3 year Degree plus appropriate experience.

PHSE 115 Fundamentals of Dance: intro to movement systems
PHSE 116 Elements of Dance: Intro to choreography and analysis
PHSE 235 Contemporary Dance: Choreography in historical and analysis contexts
PHSE 326 Dance in Education: teaching dance in the classroom issues & practices
PHSE 325 Dance in the Community: Dance and elderly, disabled, ecology
PHSE 414 Adv. Issues in Dance Education: Philosophies & practice in dance education
PHSE 427/428 Adv. Topics in PE: Dance. Different focus each year: 2007 Summer School - India Ethnography field trip; 2008 Summer School (Auckland OU campus) - Dance Education and Ecology

Masters in Dance Studies:
PHSE 590 Research Report
PHSE 471 Research Method/Seminar
plus 96 other approved points at 300, 400, 500 level of which 36 points must be dance specific
