The Bachelor of Dance provides an opportunity to
pursue in-depth practical and theoretical understandings
of the numerous fields associated with dance teaching
and practice.
Areas of study in the Bachelor of Dance degree include
Dance Practice I to VI including ballet, jazz, modern and
contemporary dance techniques. Choreographic theory
and practice as well as dance history is highlighted in
Dance Studies I, II and III. Cultural Dance and Drama
provide further depth to your dance studies. Students
also learn Anatomy, Human Structure and Function,
Nutrition, Psychology and dance research skills.
In the third year, as a part of Dance Co-operative I and
II,
students have the opportunity to gain work experience in
a
dance field or organisation of their choice. Co-operative
learning is more than work experience, it's a strategy for
students to apply dance knowledge to practice, advancing
dance skills through reflection and critical analysis.
Elective study options in the Bachelor of Dance
programme enable students to specialise in related
dance fields, such as Small Business Management,
English or other subjects, which are necessary for
teaching at secondary schools.
Students interested in pursuing a career teaching dance
based on the Arts Curriculum in New Zealand schools,
are required to complete an additional one year Graduate
Diploma in Secondary Teaching after completing the
three year Bachelor of Dance degree.
