A conference to celebrate the diversity of dance in Aotearoa New Zealand!
9 to 15 July 2005, Auckland

This year's dance conference Tuanui Whakamaru - Dance Canopy 05 is an ambitious dance enterprise and the first of its kind in New Zealand. In a bold move, four dance ventures are being held almost concurrently and all with a kilometre or two of each other in Auckland. TUHONO - Intersections, The Tertiary Dance Festival, in association with DANZ, is being held from 9- 15 July at Unitec School of Performing and Screen Arts. Alongside of this is Kahui Whetu - The Stars, which is mentoring, both creation and performance, for the professional dance community. The NZADT, the New Zealand Association of Dance Teacher's Conference is also being held at Unitec from 13 to 15th July and Kokirikiri - Moving Forward - which celebrates dance in the school curriculum and youth dance with a Teachers Refresher Course is being held at TAPAC, just down the road from 11 to 15th July.

Overall conference coordinator, Mary Jane O'Reilly said the conference was a unique opportunity for practitioners, choreographers, students, private studio and school teachers to attend workshops, performances and forums. "Conferences are always great for networking and this one will be especially good as it covers such a wide range of ages and experience. Students will be able to meet potential employers such as teachers and choreographers, teachers and choreographers can meet each other and students can meet dance people from their special area of passion or expertise - from film dance to dance health, to all the different dance techniques and aesthetics. So often the various sectors of the dance community work in isolation from each other - so this will provide networking opportunities which I am sure will have a lasting impact."

The Tertiary Dance Festival is expecting a large number of students from all over New Zealand, and some from Australia, in particular from WAPPA in Perth to attend. There will classes in the four dance styles, classical ballet, mainstream dance, contemporary and multi-cultural. As well as classes, there will be workshops in current performance research perspectives; dance writing and reviewing; beginner to advanced level techniques; professional and choreographic practices; cutting edge technologies and developments and dance health, injury prevention and management. The Unitec dance foyer will be a market place to advertise events or activities and practitioners and schools can set up stalls alongside monitors showing video dance work.

There will also be a performance by a senior practitioner (yet to be finalised) showings by students and a formal dinner for the dance industry. Out of town students and tutors can choose to either be billeted with Auckland participants, or for a reasonable rate stay on campus at the Oakridge Student Accommodation. The conferences are well ahead with planning but there are still details to be worked out so keep up-to-date with the latest information plus booking on the website http://www.danz.org.nz/conference
