DANZ QUARTERLY ISSUE No 12 – July, August, September 2008
Editorial
While we always plan for a balance of dance perspectives in our stories, DANZ Quarterly issues sometimes take on a life of their own. In this issue, the under-pinning theme is change. The very nature of art is to confront the past and break with tradition. Equally powerful is the impact of external agencies – funding mechanisms, patrons and political forces.
All these elements are represented in this issue, which also has a distinct international flavour. Shona Dunlop MacTavish’s wonderful history of taking the inspiration of Viennese expressionist choreographer Bodenwieser, continues with her own dance history in Dunedin; Michael Parmenter looks at recent trends in Germany where movement seems to have vanished from dance; Roger Copeland comments on the dire state of arts funding in the US, and there are insights from the unique voice of Finnish choreographer Tero Saarinen. There is also the start of a two-part examination on the challenges faced by women dancing into their 40s and beyond.
As this issue goes to print, dancers in major centres throughout New Zealand are gathering to discuss the nature of dance in this early part of the 21st century and prepare a vision of it’s future shape. There is no doubt the outcome of these forums will move us to another place.
