DANZ QUARTERLY Issue No. 10
January, February, March 2008
Editorial
The Artist has a voice in a world that is not bound by place. We New Zealanders are an island nation defined by immigration and diaspora, characterised by a restless creative pulse that pulls and pushes artists to and from our shores. Lemi Ponifasion has stated that the 21st century artist should know what is happening in Shanghai, Stockholm and Alaska – that we are interconnected in a world that knows no boundaries.
Samoan born Aotearoa choreographer Ponifasio is known throughout Europe for his poetic insights into post-colonialism and the dislocations of identity; English choreographer Christopher Hampson has found a receptive home with the Royal New Zealand Ballet for his eloquent creations; Chinese-Indonesian choreographer and artist, Liong Xi, came to our country in 1960 and died in July this year, he has contributed hugely to our artistic community; American dance-maker and writer Tarin Chaplin and Australian Katrina Rank, the 2007 Caroline Plummer Community Dance Fellow, visited New Zealand this year, leaving us with insights that we will treasure.
This edition of DANZ Quarterly pays homage to these unique creative talents, together with a number of others, and celebrates the international world of the artist, where an idea can be born in a Pacific atoll, shaped in a West Auckland warehouse and find receptive accord in a Viennese opera house. We are privileged to witness the remarkable insights of artists, and we should celebrate the professionalism and generosity of their voices.
