DANZ Quarterly Issue 23 - April, May, June 2011DANZ Quarterly #23 cover

DEAR READERS
Once again the dance community in
Christchurch has been severely hit by
earthquake damage. We can only admire
their courage and determination in keeping a
dance profile alive in the most trying of times.
It is appropriate that we hear from one of
Christchurch’s stalwarts, Adam Hayward,
and dedicate this editorial to its brave dance
community.
Francesca Horsley, Editor

I am writing this from a temporary office just outside the cordon that is
still in place around our wonderful city.

I see images and pictures of what used to be our office on the news,
well what’s left of it, and that’s as close as I’ve been able to get. We
know our things are still in there but we do not know if we are ever
going to be allowed back in to recover them, but most importantly no
one was in our office when the quake struck on February 22nd.
Files and computers, archives and teacups can be replaced but
people can’t and at the end of the day we have suffered in a miniscule
way compared to those who have lost loved ones.

The last couple of weeks have been spent taking stock, checking on
our dancers and our community to see how they are and thinking
about our future.
After the September quake we were quickly back up and running and
full steam ahead with plans for Body Festival, Southern Lights Dance
Company, Dancing Like the Stars and South Island Dance Network.
This time it’s slightly different, our city will never be the same but we
are determined to carry on. We need to celebrate the strength, resolve
and resiliency of our people and provide them with opportunities to
escape from the routine of survival that is daily life into celebrating the
fact that we are still here and can come together to do this. In my mind
the arts and dance in particular provide a wonderful way of doing this.
So rest assured, we will be back. We will present our work this year
and we will be stronger for it. We may look a little different for a while
as our venues are rebuilt and our city resurrected, but at our heart will
always be the desire to dance.

With best wishes from Christchurch
