Editorial

One of the beauties of dance is its ability to encompass multiple voices, and yet be understood as a common language. This edition of DANZ Quarterly is a tribute to the ability of dance practitioners who take their dance to the world, explore its forms, and express its unique dialects, thus expanding our world and their own. This comes with a sense of adventure and often at some cost.

Francine Sweet and Jane Luscombe embrace flamenco; Shona Dunlop MacTavish stepped into the burgeoning European dance world and got caught up in the dangers of World War II; Kahurangi has a twenty five year history of taking Maori dance theatre to the world, and Atamira is following this vibrant tradition with its tour to Hawaii.

On the local scene, mixed ability dance is profiled with Christchurch’s Jolt; edgy works are explored in a review of the Fringe festival and the New Zealand School of Dance graduation programme features works by classical and contemporary Europeans masters.

Dancing writing by practitioners has a new confident presence; we feature a review of recent poems by dancing master, Douglas Wright, and a poem by Kristian Larsen.

We can be justly proud of our talented dance community in Aotearoa New Zealand. It is appropriate to reiterate the comments from a review of works of Merce Cunningham’s dance legacy at last year’s Melbourne International Arts Festival - “I couldn’t help thinking how good our own dancermakers are.”
